In this way idolatry becomes a trap for one’s life. Whether it is because of a father’s misfortune or because people are ordered to do so, stones and plants begin to be called by the name that was never supposed to be shared with anything or anyone else.
And this was the occasion of deceiving human life: for men serving either their affection, or their kings, gave the incommunicable name to stones and wood.
So all this became a deadly trap, because people who were grieving, or under royal authority, would take objects of stone or wood, and give them the honor reserved for the One God.
And this became a snare for the world, that people enslaved to either grief or tyranny conferred the incommunicable Name on stones and wood.
Thus, this became a snare for humankind, since people, whether victimized by misfortune or by tyranny, assigned to objects of stone and wood the name that belongs to no other.
And this became a hidden trap for humankind, because people, in bondage to misfortune or to royal authority, bestowed on objects of stone or wood the name that ought not to be shared.
